Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Protection Testing Engineer to join our growing team in India. This role is ideal for relevant experience or academic background in electrical systems, and are eager to start their career in the Testing and Commissioning of Protection Relays within the Transmission & Distribution Substation sector.
Working alongside experienced protection and commissioning engineers, you will gain hands-on experience in protection relay testing & commissioning, schematic verification, and power system protection schemes across LV, MV, HV, and EHV substations. This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop technical skills while working with industry-leading testing equipment such as Omicron etc.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the testing and commissioning of protection relays and protection schemes for LV, MV, HV, and EHV transmission and distribution substations.
Support senior engineers in performing secondary injection testing, functional testing, and commissioning activities.
Assist in configuring and testing protection relays from major manufacturers including ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, GE, and SEL.
Review and interpret Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), protection schematics, wiring diagrams, interlocking logic, and control drawings under the guidance of senior engineers.
Participate in schematic checks, wiring verification, loop checks, and protection panel inspections.
Assist with testing and verification of IEC 61850 communications, GOOSE messaging, and substation automation systems.
Support the setup, operation, maintenance, and calibration tracking of testing equipment including Omicron, Doble, and Megger test sets.
Record test results and assist in preparing commissioning reports, test records, red-line markups, and as-built documentation.
Support troubleshooting activities related to protection relays, control systems, and substation equipment.
Coordinate with site teams, OEM representatives, contractors, and clients during testing and commissioning activities.
Ensure compliance with safety procedures, permit-to-work requirements, project specifications, and quality standards.
Assist in the setup, connection, and operation of testing and commissioning instruments for electrical equipment and protection systems.
Support the maintenance, handling, calibration tracking, and proper storage of testing instruments to ensure their readiness and accuracy for commissioning activities.
Key Requirements
0–1 years of experience in Protection Relay Testing and Commissioning or Electrical Substation Projects.
Understanding of electrical systems, including high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) infrastructure.
Basic understanding of power system protection principles and substation equipment.
Familiarity with protection schemes such as Overcurrent, Earth Fault, Differential, Distance, and Transformer Protection is desirable.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, SLDs, schematic diagrams, and protection logic drawings.
Strong willingness to learn, travel to project sites, and work in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering / Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) or Diploma in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (DEEE).
Willingness to travel to site
A proactive and willing attitude towards learning and hands-on training.
